OWL (Our Whole Lives)
Our comprehensive sexuality education program
Our Whole Lives is a series of sexuality education curricula jointly developed by the Unitarian Universalist Association and The United Church of Christ. The curricula are based on the Guidelines for Comprehensive Sexuality Education (pdf) produced by the National Guidelines Task Force, a group of leading health, education, and sexuality professionals assembled by the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS). Our Whole Lives covers topics and skills that both parents and students want to have available but schools are less likely to cover. Classes are taught by carefully selected leaders, trained and approved by the national OWL training program.
Children’s OWL Program
We offer two Children’s UU Sexuality Education programs (K/1st and 5th Grade) during January and February. The K/1 program supports parents in educating children about birth, babies, bodies and families and includes lessons on abuse prevention. In the 5th grade program participants learn about and discuss the physical and emotional changes of puberty. Participants will read It's Perfectly Normal by Robie Harris, and examine topics such as values and sexuality, communication and decision making.
8th Grade OWL Program
Offered Wednesday evenings with weekend retreats, beginning in October, this abstinence-based, comprehensive sexuality education program is a unique opportunity for our eighth graders to learn about all aspects of their sexuality: spiritual, physical, mental, and emotional. OWL is recommended for anyone planning to go on the 9th Grade trip next year.
Orientation for 8th Grade Owl will be held in October 5th from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
OWL Fees
Fees for our OWL programs are $80 for 8th grade OWL, $30 for 5/6 and $20 for K/1 OWL. 8th Grade and 5/6 Owl participants are also required to purchase a resource book.
